Described by Larsen (1965), accepted by Larsen (1987). The type specimen was collected on 21st of 1963 in south Thailand (Khao Yai), a second population was found on Ko Chang, an island of eastern Thailand. It differs from the other Thismia spp. in section Sarcosiphon by its three pits on top of the mitre, built by the connate three inner tepals. This, however, reminds to similar cup-like structures in Thismia appendiculata, where they are elevated above the mitre by fused tepal appendages, and T. fungiformis, being part of the ornamented inner tepals.
