Brachycorythis pumilio (Lindley) Reichenbach f. 1882
Brachycorythis pumilio was first described as Penthea pumilio by Lindley (1862). Reichenbach f. (1882) transferred it to the genus Brachycorythis (also including autotrophic species), which is the accepted name by WSCP (2021) and World Flora Online (2021) today. Several synonyms have been used for this species and taxonomy of the Brachycorythis complex is still discussed (Szlachetko 2006). Schlechter (1915) included both latter names in the genus Schwartzkopffia coined by Kränzlin (1900) as S. pumilio. Summerhayes (1936) proposed B. rosea and B. pumilio to be synonyms of Schwartzkopffia pumilio supporting the purely mycoheterotrophic genus Schwartzkopffia. Later, Summerhayes (1955) and Szalchetko (2006) still referred to B. pumilio as species of Schwartzkopffia. The latter author proposed several other genera like Phyllomphax Schlechter or Afrorchis Szlachetko to differentiate the Brachycorythis-complex, which, however, are also not accepted by most botanists and WCSP (2021).
This rather small mycoheterotrophic hemicryptophyte can be found in tropical West Africa from Guinea to Nigeria with a lack of evidence from Benin and Ghana (POWO 2021).
