Mycoheterotrophic Plants

How many of them are there?

Thismia americana Pfeiffer

Described by Pfeiffer (1914), accepted by Maas et al. (1986). This species  is one out of two extratropical representatives of Thismia, from the temperate USA (Illinois). It is closely related to the Australian Thismia rodwayi, occuring in Tasmania (von Müller 1891, Roberts et al. 2003), New Zealand (Cheesman 1908, Bell 1971), Queensland (Cribb 1986), Victoria (Coleman 1936, 1941) and New South Wales (Roberts et al. 2003), a remarkable disjunction. Unfortunately, it could not be recollected since 1917, despite eager searching campaigns (see Chicago Wilderness Magazin of Summer 2004).
