Hypopitys monotropa Crantz ssp. hypophegea (Wallrich) Tzvelev
Differs from ssp. monotropa by a glabrous style and ovary, the roundish shape of the ovary, and the predominant distribution in deciduous forests (Seybold 2011). Wallace (1975), treating this species as Monotropa hypotiys, does not accept subspecies and lists 84 synonyms instead. He argues that european taxonomists did not include specimen of other parts of the world and that they did not take into account that the variabel characters in M. hypopitys are also variabel in other genera of the Monotropoideae. In fact, POWO and WFO both treat Hypopitys monotropa and its subspecies as synonyms to Monotropa hypopitys.
