Corallorhiza bulbosa A.Richard & Galeotti 1845
Corallorhiza bulbosa was described by Richard & Galeotti (1845) and is till today the accepted name for the species (WCSP 2021). This species is endemic to central and south Mexico and Guatemala (POWO 2021). The flowers were found to be peloric to a small degree, meaning that some flowers in a population can develop shifts in morphology and symmetry (Freudenstein 1997). This species occures in altitudes between 2.500 to 3.200 m. C. maculata is sometimes found to be growing together with C. bulbosa in the same habitat and is morphologically very similar. C. bulbosa can be distinguished by an obscure mentum located at the very summit of the ovary and a minute maculation on the lip and on the lateral petals (Freudenstein 1997). For a long time it was not recognised as separate species from C. maculata as the illustrations for Richard & Galeotti (1845) were never actually published.
