Firstly described by Eastwood (1902) as Monotropa californicus, recombined to Hypopitys californicus by Heller (1913). Small (1914) described Pityopus oregona and noted Monotropa californicus from Eastwood as a synonym. The correct combination has been done by Copeland (1935). Distributed in California and Oregon, accepted by Wallace (1975).
