First description by Philippi (1864), who lost most of his material in a fire of his house on the 2nd Nov. 1863. He claims the loss of these specimen for the difficulties to comprehend the gynostemium, since he initially thought it is an orchid. However, he already stated that the gynostemium is very deviating from other orchids. A neotype was designated by Ibisch et al. (1996).
